Patriot Caps started because I couldn't find a decent Australian flag cap. Everything out there was either cheap tourist stock or too loud to wear twice.

I served in the Australian Army, deployed to Afghanistan. I run the business from Diamond Creek: I design the caps, heat press every design myself, and pack every order. If you message us, you're talking to me.

How it's made

Pressed here, one at a time

The design is heat pressed onto the foam front panel, one cap at a time. Clean edges, and the small stars in the Southern Cross stay sharp instead of blurring the way a cheap print does.

The blanks are made in Asia. Every bit of decoration and finishing happens here. I press every design myself in Diamond Creek, check it, and pack it.

Australia barely has a textile industry left. Even the Olympic uniform is made offshore. So we're honest about it, and we keep every dollar of the work we can here, to support Australian businesses.

I was quite impressed while watching the video of production.
I chose the “Digger” because it seemed very discreet, and because it’s a veteran’s business I even left a 10% tip.
My first surprise, when I received the cap, was that the flag motif wasn’t embroidered, just painted, but the biggest was, when I saw the label “Made in China” inside.
I understand, that a business is there to make money, but it’s not very patriotic to support our biggest threat, the CCP, over our homegrown businesses.
Just because I’m patriotic, I go to great lengths to avoid products made in China.…
I left 3 stars because it still looks good and I’m not heartless, but deducted one for the embroidery (lack of), because it makes it look a bit cheap, and another for the cap not being Aussie made.
I should have deducted another for the CCP, but I didn’t…
I will regret that later.

Hey Robert, thanks for the review & for the tip, that genuinely means a lot.

Fair points, and I'd rather answer them properly than dodge them.

On the flag not being embroidered. It isn't paint. The Digger is heat pressed, which bonds the design into the fabric under heat and pressure, so it won't crack or peel the way a screen print does. It's a deliberate choice on that design because the detail is finer than embroidery can hold at that size. If you want stitched thread, the Pioneer is our embroidered version.

On the Made in China label. You're right, and we've never hidden it. The blanks are made in Asia. Every bit of the design, the embroidery, the heat pressing and the finishing is done here by Australian tradespeople. That's why you will never see 'Australian made' written anywhere on our site, because it wouldn't be true and I'm not going to pretend otherwise.

The reason is simpler than it looks. There is basically no cap blank manufacturing left in Australia. I went looking before I started. I've written the whole thing up here: https://www.patriotcaps.com.au/blogs/news/are-caps-made-in-australia

Short version, that industry died out decades ago and nobody has restarted it, so every cap brand in this country is importing blanks. Some of them just don't tell you.

What I can control is where the money ends up. Australian owned, run out of Diamond Creek by me, and 5% of every sale goes to Swiss 8 for veteran mental health.

If it's still not sitting right with you, send it back and I'll refund you, tip included. No hard feelings either way.

Cheers, Michael

The cap and the design is good but, at A$70, it does have a pretty outrageous profit margin built into the price, even with $3.50 said to go to charity. Most baseball caps at around $20-30 so someone is making a lot of money. That being said, I knew the cost in advance so there was no deception.

Thanks for the honest review Sam, & it's a fair question on the price.

Here's where it actually goes. We buy our caps through Australian suppliers, & all the embroidery, printing & finishing is done here in Australia by Australian tradespeople. That costs a lot more than having everything made & finished offshore in bulk. On top of that there's GST, tax, the 5% that goes to Swiss 8, ad spend, packaging, & all the usual costs of running a small business.

The $20 to $30 caps you see are almost always produced & finished overseas at volume (we only launched our store on June 24 this year & am buying small batches at a time). That's the difference. Supporting Australian business just costs more, & that's the trade off we've chosen to make.

Really appreciate you buying one & taking the time to leave your feedback, it means a lot for a small brand like ours.

Cheers,
Michael

Why we give back

5% of every sale goes to Swiss 8

Swiss 8 was started by Afghanistan veterans. Free, practical mental-health tools for Australian veterans. Training, nutrition, sleep, routine. Over 2,000 supported, and they're building NinGula Homestead now.

I got out of the Army in 2012. It took another fourteen years before I started this. What stayed with me was the way Australians pull together when it counts, and wanting more of that back home. That is why Patriot Caps exists.

5% of every sale. Not profit.
